my friend had this problem with herself and religion. in the last year she changed her thinking to "Christianity, the religion, is different to Christianity, the fandom" in which the fandom is the church and the religion is her personal faith. because faith IS a personal thing, it's not about meeting expectations of a so called "man of God" who essentially lectures people, it's about being true to yourself and knowing in your heart whether you are being a kind, moral person.

I agree with your friend! My friend was supposed to write a thesis about how Christianity could be compared to like Kpop fandom—the idolatry, the blind following, the materialism, etc. And I agree that faith is a personal thing, my faith is my relationship with God, not how many times I do the traditional Christian/Catholic things, or how much I donate. Those are all how you perform your faith, faith performativity in that sense, but true faith is just really you and God.
