Honestly, the situation with Johnny Depp just pisses me off so much. It’s actually genuinely upsetting.
Forget for a moment that it’s a celebrity scandal and look at the bigger picture here.
An abuse victim essentially had their reputation dragged through the mud by their abuser for almost three years.
Just imagine for a moment that you’ve just gotten out of an abusive relationship, and your abuser has decided to go around telling everybody that YOU were the abusive one, and everybody just believes them without question solely because of their gender.
Our society routinely fails to support male abuse victims, and with Johnny Depp, it’s clearer than ever. We were all so eager to “cancel” him when the allegations came out, so eager that we refused to accept the possibility that he was innocent.
Even when evidence began to suggest that Amber Heard was a liar, we still refused to let up. We continued to praise her as a “brave victim standing up to her abuser”, we let her become a prominent figure in the #MeToo movement.
And it was all a lie.
It’s only now that hard evidence has come out that Johnny Depp really was abused by Amber Heard that we’re finally starting to come around. For three years, we just sat by and watched as an abuser destroyed their victim’s reputation.
It’s time that our society finally accepted a truth that we have seemingly tried so desperately to avoid. Men can be victims of domestic abuse, and women can be perpetrators of domestic abuse.
